Chapter 13

“Someone in this town knows who they are,” said Will to her twin brother. “Their— and by extension, our— lives are in danger, and you want me to take her shopping?”

“She can’t wear the dress again,” said Percy. “And she could barely walk in those shoes. She needs something club-appropriate that isn’t conspicuous.”

“Why is that my responsibility?”

“Because you dress the best.”

Sometimes, she thought bitterly, he was too reasonable for his own good. Will turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, the click of her shoes a satisfying tempo.

Ever since Viola had brought home the first note, it was like they had all been collectively holding their breaths waiting for Jaz and Hira to come to Pipe Valley. None of them were sure what could be done in the meantime, other than copious amounts of protective magic on those necklaces they wore. The whole house had turned into a nightmare. Simon was having one of his weeks. Percy wasn’t sleeping. Matty was skittish and secretive and the tension between the Livingstones was starting to give Will a migraine.

She distantly thought that she needed a holiday somewhere sunny and quiet. Preferably surrounded by beautiful women.

She was trying, okay? No matter what anyone wanted to say about her, Will Sinclair tried. It was hardly her fault that Viola responded to everything she said with a grimace and darted out of every room Will entered. Forgive her for not wanting to go shopping with the girl.

She couldn’t take the bike, so she borrowed Percy’s pickup, feeling more and more like a balding, middle-aged man every minute as she drove to Siren’s. Girls like her were not meant to be seen driving yellow trucks around small towns— to go on shopping expeditions to Target of all places. Girls like her were meant for storms, for parties and the open road.

She’d take that holiday any time now.

She had to wait an obscenely long time before Viola finally left the restaurant. She briefly halted in her tracks, blinking and shaking her head, when she saw who had come to pick her up.

“I was expecting your brother.” Viola had barely driven anywhere alone since the first note. Percy’s idea.

Hello to you too, thought Will. “Well, you got me.”

Viola didn’t respond. Will switched the stereo on.

“What is this?” asked Viola.

It was a popular rap group. Will’s mood lifted. “You like it?”

“No.”

A laugh was startled out of her. How was she meant to respond to that? “Okay.” Viola didn’t ask again, but Will decided to keep talking anyway. “This song is so overplayed now. You really don’t know it? Do you live under a rock?”

Viola glared. It occurred to Will a beat too late that she might have said the wrong thing.

Backtracking, she explained. “Most popular music sucks, anyway. You’ve missed out on approximately nothing re: the rock you’ve been living under.”

She had been trying to make a joke, but Viola appeared to take her words at face value. “I don’t live under a rock. I just don’t see why I should make time for stupid things when I’ve got survival to worry about.
